"Cracking the Einstein Code:
Relativity and the birth of black hole physics"
Having Einstein's field equations for general relativity does not immediately tell you what the gravitational field surrounding a massive, rotating body is actually like. In the early 1960s, New Zealand-born physicist Roy Kerr finally "cracked the Einstein code". Kerr's solution describes objects so massive and dense that their gravitational field prevents light from escaping. Einstein himself was sceptical that such "black holes" could exist in nature.
